Can anybody recommend which of the three available is the best reading? My comic shop is running the archives at 25% off this weekend so any help would be appreciated.

Volumes 1 and 3 are must haves (one being historically important, but with crude art, and three being closer to the classic character Captain Marvel would become), 2 is good, and better than average for the Golden Age, but isn't AS good as the other two due to a lackluster set of stories by Simon and Kirby. Not their best work, but not bad by any means. You should get 2 at some point, but it's not the one to start with. (Even though I did.) Personally, I'd recommend getting them in order to see the progression of the character, but that's just me. The series will really start heating up with volume 4 which sees the introduction of Captain Marvel Jr., and Beck, or Beck-style art in Captain Marvel Adventures, making the line of books more unified.

Cap gets better with time, so I'd recommned Volume 3. However, it has a large portion devoted to a cross-over with Spy Smasher, including the Spy Smasher stories. If that appeals to you, then Volume 3 is the best, by far. The strip is really hitting its stride with Volume 3.

If you don't want the cross-over, go with Volume 1. The Fawcett gang is experimenting, trying stuff out. It's got some wild adventures, the intro of Sivana and Beautia, along with Billy, Cap, and the wizard. Plus, you get the "ashcan" edition of Captain Thunder!

thanks for the suggestions, I can't wait to pick up a new archive. My finances are limited so I only pick up one or two at my shop's biannual sale.

First off, I wish my local store HAD Archives.

If they did, THEN I'd wish they'd sell them at 1/2 off once a year!

Man... why does Arkansas suck so bad?!

The Spy-Smasher cross-over is actually in Volume 2.
I'd recommend reading them in order, just because it's so interesting watching the stories develop, and seeing the creative team try things, then discard them, or contradict them in subsequent stories. I'm looking forward to Vol. 4, where they will really settle into the "classic" style.

Yup, you are right. I read that book just before V3 came out, so it all ran together in my mind.

I remember thinking the quality in Volume 3 was really uneven - some great stories along with some real stinkers...

All the "Shazam" volumes have been somewhat uneven. But, once it got its act together, Capt. Marvel became a thoroughly delightful feature. I just wish it hadn't taken us so long to reach the point of volume 3, as some really terrific endeavors await.

Your comic shop wouldn't happen to be in Houston would it?

Yes, my comic shop is in Houston, it's Bedrock City. I picked up some Jonah Hex early issues at their sale along with a couple of Star Wars figures.
